Soaring Report for April 10, 2000

Collected by John Fallon

Saturday Flying was "Yikes"

For those of you who may be curious: the flying for those pilots that eat, sleep and breathe aviation was "FUN" (as Shawn put it). For the rest of us it was "spooky" to say the least!! Desi said he banged his head so hard on the canopy he thought he was gonna' find egg all over it when he got back. As for me....I felt like a monkey trying to put my feet and butt on a football!! It was a little windy!! Straight and level required full deflection on the controls. And one "power jockey" reported his stall horn going off AFTER he had landed! The pucker factor was surely working today. Have a great week 'yall.....

Ruel Roosts the Chicken hawk

Although not a soaring report, I did take up the C172 "Chicken Hawk" on Saturday just to cruise the area. When I turned crosswind, I felt like I was on a circus ride! I continued onto downwind and right back to the field for a total 0.3 hrs flight.

John Gets Knocked Down
(but gets up again)

Saturday, dawned a dark angry gray,
And I thought to myself no flying today.
I decided to earn some points with the missus,
and started to do the dishes.

I confessed that I was hers for the day,
thinking that she might want to play.
Her priorities were not the same as mine,
So the furniture I started to shine.

The old stuff was really starting to gleam,
Caused, I noticed by an errant sun beam.
Into each life some sun must shine,
But when I am doing this, why mine.

Start to think up some pretext or sham,
To escape these duties as fast as I can.
Told her I haven't been soaring since St. Patrick's Day,
All I got was a smile and No Way.

She got tired of watching me do all this crap,
And decided to sneak off for a nap.
So off to hook up the trailer I ran,
Only to be blown flat on my can.

With the wind better than forty miles per hour,
My spirits went from high to dour.
When she awoke "She who must be obeyed"
Was surprised as hell that I stayed.

Sat and read Matt Hyatt's report,
Decided I am too old for that kind of sport.
Just as glad I hadn't snuck out and played,
Boosted my chances of getting .

Professional Pilots Preferred Friday

I took 2 4000' tows during the Friday weekday operation. Gerry Bell dropped me off in lift both times. Unfortunately, after the 1st release, I flew out of the lift during my right turn. Gerry, maybe next time you can tow me to a point just a little to the left of the lift. I did manage 2 different 500' gains which extended the 1st flight to 30 minutes.

The second flight went better. When I released, I was in solid lift, along with a thermaling Hawk. I stayed there for about 10 minutes and then departed because I was getting too far down wind. Eventually I found myself over the NW end of the runway around 1500' feet. I was thinking about landing, when I encountered strong lift. I rode this to about 3000' and then departed when it began to get crowded. This second flight lasted about 40 minutes.
